Knowing your skin type

When applying makeup, it’s good to know what skin type you have. Whether it be you just applying makeup to yourself or applying makeup to a client, knowing what skin type they have and what foundation to use for example, ensures for makeup that lasts, and there’s nothing worst then having your makeup done and having it start to wear off, especially if you plan on looking good for the night.

When studying it was drilled into my head about completing client consultations and knowing your clients skin before you apply anything!

So I thought, makeup artist or not, it’s good to know about what type of skin you have.

There are 4 skin types:

Normal skin – If the world was perfect, we would all have perfect skin, but it isn’t and we don’t. You lucky people you with your normal skin. When I say normal, it generally means your skin has a good balance of both water and oil meaning your skin doesn’t break out as much therefore you hardly get any pimples or blackheads because there isn’t too much of one thing.

Oily skin – It’s not I look a bit oily in this particular part of my face today, oily skin is where your skin has an excess of oil and with that excess, there is shine. Yes, there is more oil on your T-zone (that is your forehead, nose & chin) but your entire face may also be oily. With oily skin you are more prone to having pimples, blackheads, whiteheads and just having larger pores in general.

Dry skin – You know your skin is dry when your skin feels tight. Your skin lacks oil and you may find that it is more sensitive and it can also appear dull. It can be rough and flaky in some areas, itchy at times and overall lacks moisture.

Combination skin – This is me right here. Combination skin is a mix between oily and dry. Oily parts include the T-zone and this is where most of the oil appears on your face rather than any other part of your face and dry areas are located more on your cheek area.

So, next time when you purchase a product think about the type of skin you have. Using the right product for the right skin type definitely helps. We can’t all have perfect skin, but in the mean time there are products out there that can get us close to it.

Hope this helps. xx

SEE

Shiseido accentuating powder blush in B2

Blushes can do so much, they always seem to give you that pop of colour your face needs to brighten up your look. With its angled brush, the powder is easily applied to give you that nice soft colour, like a natural blush. It contains little hints of glitter which I think works really well to help you get that glow. The only thing is it’s not as long lasting and touch ups are required.

Caroline’s tip: On cold, winter days, I like to apply the tiniest bit of powder blush on the tip of my nose.

SMELL

Elizabeth Arden Green Tea scent spray

If you want something refreshing with a light feel to it, then you need to try this perfume out. Not only is it inexpensive it’s one of those classic smells that isn’t too overpowering. It’s simple, it’s fresh and has been around for quite some time now, so this scent must be doing something right to last this long.

FEEL

Lete Manicure nailpolish

I love nailpoish and I’ve tried almost every colour available. Sadly, the wholesaler I go to no longer stock this brand which is a shame, because it was $5 for 15mL and there were so many colours I hadn’t purchased. Although not a popular brand, I was surprised with the durability of it.  With inexpensive nail polishes I find them to be a lot less thick in colour and I would need to apply about 3 coats. With this one I found 2 coats was enough, sometimes one was fine and a top coat after. It lasted me about a good 5 to 6 days before it started to fade. I love it and if anybody knows where I can find it, let me know!

Caroline’s tip: Always use a base coat when applying nalipolish, it prevents your nails from staining and lasts just that bit longer.

Cleanse that dirt away in 30 seconds!

There are so many nights where I just don’t care about washing my face, all I want to do is go to bed and sleep. But I do it because I know when I wake up the next morning my face is going to be super oily. Gross.

When I’m really tired and I’m sure you all have done this, you just pop that cleanser in your hand and just rub rub rub all over your face, wash it off, quick toner, slap on that moisturizer and there you go, you’re done and now bed. Yay!

I always wash my face, morning and night with cleanser, toner and all that jazz, but how long are you supposed to have that cleanser on your face for? Surprised or not, you should actually be cleansing for 30 seconds before you wash it off. Never knew that? Try it tonight and you’ll see the difference, I know I did when I first tried it. Those 30 seconds really let the foam or gel or whatever type of cleanser you’re using to remove all that dirt deep down in your pores, any excess oils and build up of dirt from the day.

Don’t forget to also exfoliate at least two or three times a week and when you can, slap on a mud mask once every two weeks. Just simple things like leaving that cleanser on for 30 seconds help for clearer and cleaner skin.
